Emily Maxwell, San Francisco, Litigation

Emily has a long history of pro bono work. During her first year of practice, she second chaired a trial where the firm defended a battered woman and her family in litigation brought by her batterer. She also worked in conservatorship cases, including a jury trial for conservatorship of a woman suffering from mental illness. Later, Emily was one of the team leaders on Wobogo v. Yeganeh, in which the firm represented dozens of homeowners in the East Palo Alto community who were victimized by a mortgage broker. Emily not only helped lead the team of attorneys on that case, but first chaired two separate contempt trials against the defendant resulting in over 45 days imprisonment for contempt of court.

Emily was honored by the UCLA Domestic Violence Training Project for her work training child protective services workers about the intersection of child abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental illness. Emily also has been honored with the California State Bar’s Wiley Manual Award for pro bono service.
