Joshua Briones, Los Angeles - Century City, Litigation
Joshua, a member of the Los Angeles and national Pro Bono Committees, has been involved in a number of pro bono projects since joining the firm. Joshua played a lead role advocating for a defendant's right to have his rehabilitation efforts count during sentencing in
United States v. Moore, a resentencing case. The goal of
Moore was not to exonerate the defendant, but to ensure that when the court resentenced Mr. Moore, his actual rehabilitation during his incarceration be taken into account. Thanks to Joshua's efforts, Mr. Moore was resentenced to a term five years shorter than his original sentence, reducing that sentence by a third, in acknowledgement of Moore's successful, profound rehabilitation in prison. More recently, Joshua represented an African-American woman in a civil rights and personal injury action involving a Los Angeles taxi driver and taxi association in which he helped obtain an apology, a formal commitment to refrain from racial discrimination in the future and a monetary settlement. Joshua is currently leading a team representing Atom Press, a non-profit organization devoted to helping authors to publish their works in the face of political and social persecution.
