DLA Piper’s commitment to and global support for pro bono work truly sets it apart. As the General Counsel to Feeding America (formerly known as America’s Second Harvest), the nation’s largest charitable hunger relief organization, I have an incredible opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Fighting Hunger

In addition to our legal work, we have made extensive non-legal efforts to play an active role in the fight against hunger since 1988 with initiatives such as:

  • Hunger Awareness Month, our annual effort that resulted in raising over $55,000 and more than 11,000 pounds of food in June 2007.
  • Supporting hunger relief organizations in many communities around the U.S., including:
    • Bread of Life (Silicon Valley)
    • Capital Area Food Bank (Washington, D.C.)
    • Capital Area Food Bank of Texas
    • City Harvest of New York
    • Clark County Food Bank (Las Vegas)
    • Community FoodBank of New Jersey
    • Ecumenical Hunger Project (Silicon Valley)
    • Florida Association of Food Banks
    • Greater Boston Food Bank
    • Greater Chicago Food Depository
    • Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
    • Maryland Food Bank
    • North Texas Food Bank
    • Philabundance (Philadelphia)
  • Since January 2005, our New York office has participated in City Harvest's Street Fleet program by "rescuing" excess but edible food (otherwise slated to be thrown away) from local Starbucks and from our office and delivering that food to a nearby community food program at St. Paul's House. City Harvest has informed us that in 2007 the DLA Piper Street Fleet team rescued over 5,700 pounds of food. According to City Harvest, we rescued enough food on average to allow St. Paul's to provide breakfast to 16 people every day for an entire year. We are also proud to report that in 2007, thanks to the Hospitality Department, the firm's New York office became a major donor to City Harvest, contributing 1,680 pounds of our leftover food since May. In 2007, our Street Fleet team consisted of over 70 DLA Pipers, including about 40 lawyers and 30 staff.
  • Repacking donated food for distribution to other organizations that feed the hungry in most cities in which we work.
  • Providing support to hunger relief organizations in lieu of sending printed holiday cards.
  • Participating in the Father Joe Carroll Thanksgiving Day 5K run, which raises funds for the St. Vincent De Paul Village meal services in San Diego.
